   Railroad Detective Jesse Shisler was struck and killed by an express train in the eastern railroad yards in Fort Wayne.

   It is believed that he was checking a freight train that was stopped in the yards and that he was struck by the second train as he stepped from between two cars. His body was found later in the morning.

   Railroad Detective Shisler, from Oakwood, Ohio, was survived by his wife, daughter, mother and brother.

Historical Note

• Railroad Detective Shisler is the second known railroad law enforcement line of duty death in Indiana.


The responsibilities of the Pennsylvania Railroad Police Department (1846–1968) are now under the jurisdiction of the Norfolk Southern Railway Police Department.

This officer, discovered in 2016, has not been submitted for consideration as an eligible line of duty death to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund by the Norfolk Southern Railway Police Department.
