Deputy Sheriff Jacob Calvin was killed in a single-vehicle accident while responding to another accident near State Road 28 and County Road 500 West.

As he was traveling northbound on County Road 300 West, his squad car veered off the road for an unknown reason near County Road 300 South. His vehicle rolled several times before coming to rest about 100 yards from the roadway.

Deputy Calvin, who was not wearing a seat belt at the time, was ejected from his squad car. He was taken to IU Health Tipton Hospital where he later died from his injuries.

He had served with Kempton Fire and Rescue as a volunteer firefighter and emergency medical technician.

Deputy Sheriff Calvin, from Kempton, was survived by his fiancée, Samantha Hawkins; brother, Luke (Lea Andria); stepsister, Victoria Visser; stepbrother, Zach Visser; parents, Dan (Karla) Calvin and Penny (John) Williams Visser; and grandparents, Robert and Anna Marie Calvin, and Richard and LaVerne VonAhrens.

• In 2018, the bridge on State Road 28 over U.S. 31 in Tipton County was dedicated the Deputy Jacob Calvin Memorial Bridge in his honor.
