Deputy Sheriff Paul Mitchell was killed in a single-vehicle accident while responding to an alarm call at U.S. 41 and State Road 2.

   While traveling westbound on State Road 2 at Austin Street during a heavy rainstorm, his cruiser slid off the south side of the roadway and crashed into a guardrail which pierced the driver's side door.

   Deputy Mitchell was transported to St. Anthony Medical Center in Crown Point where he was pronounced dead.

   Deputy Sheriff Mitchell, from Schererville, was single and survived by his sister and parents.
