Correctional Officer Britney Meux was struck and killed by a hit-and-run driver traveling eastbound on 93rd Avenue west of Main Street in Crown Point.

   She and three other correctional officers were jogging along the outer perimeter of the Lake County Jail, while exercising at the end of their shift, when a vehicle struck all four officers from behind. Correctional Officer Meux was killed instantly and the other three correctional officers suffered severe injuries.

   The 42-year-old driver of the vehicle that struck the four officers fled the scene but surrendered the following day. He was later convicted of reckless homicide, criminal recklessness, failure to stop after an accident and reckless driving. He was sentenced to 12 years in prison and discharged in 2018.

   Correctional Officer Meux, from Crown Point, was survived by her 5-month-old daughter, Savannah Hardiman; life partner, Joseph Hardiman; mother, Jacqueline Meux; father, Herbert (Doris) Bailey; and four sisters, Mary Davis, Janea Edwards, Lanesha Meux and Tarsha (Charles) Ricks.
