Cause of Death:Captain George Hanlon was killed while directing traffic at the scene of an accident.
An intoxicated 27-year-old male was driving eastbound on Gostlin Street when he struck Captain Hanlon, throwing him 111 feet, while he was directing traffic as utility crews were repairing a downed power line. He was transported to St. Margaret Hospital were he died of a skull fracture.
The offender was later convicted of involuntary manslaughter and sentenced to one to 10 years in prison.
Captain Hanlon was widowed and survived by two sons and several brothers, one of whom served as an assistant chief with the Milwaukee Fire Department in Wisconsin.
