Patrolman Frank Dunn was shot and killed while walking his downtown beat.

As he was checking local businesses, a man rounded a corner into a laundromat parking lot and for no apparent reason shot Patrolman Dunn four times in the chest. He was transported to St. Margaret Hospital where he died.

A manhunt led to Chicago where the suspect and two of his brothers were arrested five days later after a sharp-eyed night clerk identified them as roomers at the hotel.

All three suspects were extradited after the 25-year-old prime suspect confessed to killing Patrolman Dunn and disposing of the pistol he used in the Chicago River.

He was later found guilty of first-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison in a change of venue to Porter County. His 26- and 27-year-old brothers were charged with harboring a fugitive.

Patrolman Dunn was survived by his wife, parents, two sisters and three brothers.
