   Deputy Sheriff Sarah Haylett-Jones died two days after being struck by a vehicle traveling eastbound on State Road 45 west of Bloomington.

   She was directing traffic where a wrecker was removing a stranded vehicle from a ravine, north of Airport Road, when the incident occurred.

   Deputy Haylett-Jones was initially transported to Bloomington Hospital then airlifted to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis where she remained until she died of her injuries.

   No criminal charges were filed against the 16-year-old female driver who stated she was distracted as she drove through the area.

   Deputy Sheriff Haylett-Jones, from Bloomington, had previously served with the Montgomery, Alabama, Police Department for 1½ years. In her youth, she served as a captain of the Michigan State Police Explorers. Deputy Haylett-Jones was survived by her husband, two brothers, parents and grandmother.

• In 2020, State Road 45 and 2nd Street bridge over Interstate 69 was dedicated the Sarah Irene Haylett-Jones Memorial Bridge in her honor.
