Panel 4E, Line 28 (2013)
Panel L12, Line 12 (2013)

Master Sergeant Kenneth Hayden died from complications of being accidentally shot 15 years earlier while responding to a robbery-in-progress call at a liquor store.

Although he recovered from the injury to his leg and returned to duty, 11 years later he fractured the same leg while investigating an automobile accident.

During surgery, a cancerous tumor was found and his leg was amputated forcing him to retire with a medical disability in 1986. Shortly thereafter, the cancer metastasized to his lungs and he died on September 12, 1989.

Master Sergeant Hayden was survived by his wife, four sons, sister and two brothers.

Historical Note

• Master Sergeant Hayden has the third-longest incident to line of duty death duration in Indiana.
