Correctional Officer Timothy Betts suffered a fatal heart attack while escorting an unruly inmate to the segregation unit at the Wabash Valley Correctional Facility near Carlisle.

As he and four other officers moved the inmate, Correctional Officer Betts suddenly collapsed. The other officers immediately began cardiopulmonary resuscitation and used an automated external defibrillator until an ambulance arrived. He was transported to Sullivan County Community Hospital in Sullivan where he passed away a short time later.

The 21-year-old male inmate was serving a 12-year sentence for carjacking, robbery and illegal possession of a handgun from Marion County.

Correctional Officer Betts, from Jasonville, was survived by his wife, Gloria; son, Timothy II; two daughters, Amy Barton and Ashley Craig; two grandchildren, Adilea and Brylea Barton; brother, Steve; four sisters, Billie Johnson, Doris Stout, Julie Mascari and Trisha Betts; and parents, Ted and Donna Betts.
