Incident Details
Cause of Death:Patrolman George Berryman was shot and killed after responding to a domestic disturbance call.
The wife had reported that her husband choked her before she was able to flee to a neighbor's home. Upon their arrival, Patrolman Berryman's partner turned his flashlight on the front door where the 31-year-old man was standing with a shotgun.
As the other officer attempted to warn Patrolman Berryman, the subject fired through the door and struck him in the head. He was taken to St. Joseph Memorial Hospital where he died the following day.
His partner returned fire twice as the suspect retreated into the darkness of the home, but was unaware the man had been killed until he was later found feet away from his two sleeping children.
In May 2005, Patrolman Berryman was posthumously awarded the department's Medal of Valor. He was survived by his wife, 5-year-old son, 10-year-old daughter, three sisters and three brothers.
