Officer Harry Farrell was shot and killed in a gunbattle with an armed robbery suspect who was driving a stolen vehicle from Urbana, Illinois.

After an automotive service station was robbed of $15 at gunpoint, he and another officer confronted the man in an alley.

The 21-year-old suspect opened fire and struck Officer Farrell twice who was taken to Saint Elizabeth Hospital where he died from his wounds shortly after his arrival.

The suspect, who was shot three times and initially thought to have escaped, was found dead about three hours later in a nearby alley. He had previously served a two-year term for burglary at the Wisconsin State Reformatory in Green Bay.

Officer Farrell was survived by his wife and five brothers.
