Officer Harry Farrell was shot and killed in a gunbattle with an armed robbery suspect.

After an automotive service station was robbed at gunpoint, he and another officer confronted the man in an alley.

The 21-year-old suspect opened fire and struck Officer Farrell who was taken to Saint Elizabeth Hospital where he died from his wounds shortly after his arrival.

The suspect, initially thought to have escaped, was found dead about three hours later in a nearby alley. He had previously served a two-year term for burglary in Wisconsin.

Officer Farrell was survived by his wife.
