Panel 52E, Line 29 (2016)
Panel L3, Line 14 (2016)

Night Policeman Fred Cromwell was shot and killed when he interrupted a man burglarizing a local clothing store.

He was making his early morning rounds and after finding a key in the front door to the store, he opened it and was shot twice, killing him instantly.

The 27-year-old suspect was apprehended a month later in Los Angeles, California, after a fierce gunbattle with four Los Angeles police officers.

He was extradited and later convicted of murder before being sentenced to life in prison where he died in 1942.

Night Policeman Cromwell had also served as the town's fire chief for many years. He was survived by his expectant wife and two children.
