Deputy Sheriff Floyd Settles was shot and killed when he responded to an attempted armed robbery at the American Fletcher National Bank and Trust in Cumberland.

Two male subjects entered the bank and announced a robbery. After one of the tellers activated the silent alarm, Deputy Settles arrived and was met with gunfire. He was shot in the head and died over two hours later at Community Hospital.

The suspects fled in a car that was stolen earlier in the day with $11,543 and a hostage, a 37-year-old pregnant customer, who was released a short time later.

Both suspects were subsequently apprehended, convicted by a jury of first-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison in a change of venue to Allen County.

The 40-year-old offender died in 1991 while serving his sentence. His 26-year-old second cousin was denied parole for the tenth time in 2021.

Deputy Sheriff Settles, from Indianapolis, was survived by a daughter who was born eight months after his death, two sisters, brother and parents.
