Officer Edward Fowler was shot and killed while investigating two suspicious men.

As he approached them they opened fire, striking Officer Fowler twice in the spine and abdomen. He was taken to Schneck Memorial Hospital where he died.

The suspects, who abandoned the vehicle they were driving, which had been stolen in Indianapolis the day before, fled from the scene. Despite a manhunt involving hundreds of citizens, they were never apprehended.

Officer Fowler was survived by his wife and several stepchildren.
