Panel 45W, Line 22
Panel L23, Line 6

Officer Michael Deno was shot and killed while conducting a traffic stop on a man he knew was driving with a suspended license.

During the stop, the suspect produced a firearm from his rear pocket and shot Officer Deno in the right side of his head. He was transported to St. Mary's Medical Center of Evansville where he died the next morning.

The 24-year-old suspect fled the scene, but was arrested about an hour later near Buckskin. In a death penalty case, he was subsequently convicted of murder and sentenced to life in prison without parole, plus 20 years for drug possession.

Officer Deno was survived by his wife, parents, brother, three stepbrothers, two sisters, stepsister, grandmothers and stepgrandparents. He had also served with the Oakland City Fire Department.
