Cause of Death:Deputy Marshal Pinkney Bough was shot and killed while attempting to arrest two subjects in front of the Smallwood Theatre.
He had asked the subjects to move their illegally parked vehicle and upon refusing, they were warned if they did not move their car they would be arrested. When they continued to refuse to comply, Deputy Marshal Bough attempted to arrest them.
The suspects drew a .30 Luger and .45-caliber pistol before they fired, striking Deputy Marshal Bough four times and then fled the scene. He was taken to Dunn Memorial Hospital in Bedford where he died a short time later.
The 20- and 22-year-old men surrendered the following day and were charged with first-degree murder. They both later pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter after a change of venue to Washington County and sentenced to two to 21 years in prison.
The 20-year-old offender was subsequently paroled in 1933.
Deputy Marshal Bough was survived by his wife, 12- and 16-year-old sons and three brothers.
