Policeman Harrison Hitch was killed while attempting to arrest the ex-husband of a woman at her house.

When he arrived, the man was found to be armed and while trying to get him to surrender his weapon, the suspect fired. Policeman Hitch was struck by three rounds, but was able to return fire, wounding the suspect in the arm before staggering out to the front porch where he died within minutes.

The 34-year-old suspect fled the scene and was arrested the following evening after he went to a Terre Haute hospital to receive treatment for his wound.

He was convicted of murder in a change of venue to Posey County where he was sentenced to life in prison and died in 1949.

Policeman Hitch was survived by his wife, seven sons, three daughters, two brothers and a half-sister.
