Deputy Sheriff Harold Amick was shot while searching for chicken thieves in Underwood, just south of the Scott County line.

   He was shot once in the head when he encountered three unrelated suspects who were wanted in the shooting of Patrolman John Pfaffenberger, of the Seymour Police Department, a short time earlier.

   Deputy Sheriff Amick died from his wound the following day at St. Edward Hospital in New Albany.

   Three suspects were apprehended and convicted of first-degree murder. Two offenders, ages 20 and 25, were sentenced to life in prison but one was granted parole by Governor Henry F. Schricker in June 1950 and died a month later.

   The 22-year-old shooter was sentenced to death and on October 9, 1934, he was executed by electrocution at the Indiana State Prison in Michigan City.

   Deputy Sheriff Amick, from Scottsburg, was survived by his wife and brother, who was serving as Scott County sheriff.
