   Detective Sergeant Clarence Thompson died the day after he was assaulted outside the Coffee Cup Restaurant.

   He encountered three young, unidentified men in a nearby alley late in the evening.

   Early the following morning, he died from natural causes at his home.

   Detective Sergeant Thompson was survived by his wife, son, two stepdaughters, stepmother, two brothers and sister.

   His father had also served as an officer with the department.
