Sergeant Walter Artz was shot and killed after responding to a domestic disturbance.

   As he and his partner attempted to calm the man down at the back door of the home the man suddenly began firing, fatally wounding Sergeant Artz in the right shoulder near his neck. He was taken to Union Hospital in Terre Haute where he died.

   Officers returned fire and wounded the 64-year-old man, who then died by suicide.

   Sergeant Artz, from Terre Haute, was survived by his wife and two daughters.
