Deputy Marshal
David Keith Brown
Westfield Police Department
Saturday, January 11, 1969

Panel 54W, Line 1
Panel L6, Line 4

Deputy Marshal David Brown was shot and killed while investigating a suspicious vehicle with two subjects behind the Westfield High School.

Upon requesting a records check while questioning one of the subjects seated in the passenger seat of his squad car, a struggle ensued and the man shot him six times after he was disarmed of his .38-caliber service revolver.

When a dispatcher was unable to contact Deputy Marshal Brown with the reply, a second officer was sent to check on him. Upon this officer's arrival, Deputy Marshal Brown was found shot to death sitting in the driver's seat of his patrol car.

The men, who fled the scene and suspected of livestock theft behind the school, were located over three hours later at a residence in Indianapolis. They were found as a result of Deputy Marshal Brown writing the vehicle's license plate number on his notepad.

The 39-year-old shooter was subsequently convicted of second-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison where he died in 1997.

Deputy Marshal Brown was survived by his son, daughter, brother, three sisters and parents.
