Ray Marion Fisher
White County Sheriff's Department

Panel 36E, Line 1
Panel L25, Line 9

Sheriff Ray Fisher was shot and killed one mile northwest of Buffalo while attempting to serve arrest warrants on two men for bank robbery.

The brothers were accused of robbing the Battle Ground State Bank on February 6 of $1,400. As the warrants were being read to them at the family farm, the 46-year-old man opened fire with a shotgun, striking Sheriff Fisher with three blasts that nearly decapitated him. An unarmed deputy was also wounded as he retreated behind a building.

The man then shot and killed his 41-year-old brother before turning a gun on himself. A third man, who also participated in the robbery, was later arrested in Covington.

Sheriff Fisher, a Republican from Monticello, was in the first year of his second, two-year term in office as the 13th sheriff of White County. He was survived by his wife, two teenage sons and father.

His wife, Maude Fisher, was appointed sheriff to serve the remainder of her husband's  term, becoming the first female sheriff of White County and the second female to serve as a sheriff in the state of Indiana.
