Trooper Eugene Teague was shot and killed while attempting to arrest a member of the Dillinger Gang after receiving a tip that he would be at the France Hotel in Paris, Illinois.

   Upon the arrival of the 28-year-old male and two female accomplices, ages 24 and 28, Trooper Teague struck their vehicle with his patrol car from where he was parked nearby.

   As the suspects attempted to flee in their vehicle, a gunbattle ensued with officers. Trooper Teague was accidentally struck in the back of the head by crossfire from another trooper's revolver and died a short time later.

   The man, who had been serving a 25-year sentence for auto banditry from Vigo County, escaped from the Indiana State Prison on September 26 with nine other inmates. The fugitive was taken into custody, returned to prison and released in 1946.

   Trooper Teague, from Indianapolis, was assigned to General Headquarters. He was survived by his parents.
