   Officer John McKinney was shot and killed by his partner when they got into a quarrel while on duty.

   He was transported to City Hospital where he later died.

   His 29-year-old partner was arrested and charged with murder. After claiming self-defense, he was acquitted by a jury at trial in a change of venue to Morgan County later in the year.

   Officer McKinney was survived by his wife, three daughters and father.

Historical Note

• This line of duty death incident is one of four in which the offender was a law enforcement officer.


The responsibilities of the Indianapolis Police Department (1854–2006) are now under the jurisdiction of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department.
