Officer Jesse Louden was shot while investigating a burglary at Deal's Pharmacy.

Upon their arrival, he and his partner pursued a man on foot and when shots were exchanged, Officer Louden was struck in the abdomen. His partner returned fire before the suspect escaped.

Officer Louden was transported to Methodist Hospital where he died four days later.

After nearly eight months, the 27-year-old suspect was apprehended, charged with first-degree murder and subsequently convicted of second-degree murder in a change of venue to Shelby County.

The offender was sentenced to life but escaped from prison in 1933 and again in 1940. He was recaptured after both escape attempts and later granted parole by Governor Roger D. Branigan in 1968.

Officer Louden was survived by his wife, 16-year-old son, 20-year-old daughter, sister and three brothers.
