Officer Norman Schoen was shot and killed near the street next door to his residence as he returned home after his shift.

   He was shot in the back before witnesses stated a vehicle sped away from the area. In the months leading up to the shooting, Officer Shoen had investigated bootleggers and it was believed they may have been the perpetrators.

   The suspects were never apprehended and the case remains unsolved.

   Officer Schoen was survived by his wife and two young daughters.

The responsibilities of the Indianapolis Police Department (1854–2006) are now under the jurisdiction of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department.
