Panel 41W, Line 8
Panel L26, Line 9

Sergeant Lester Jones was shot and killed by members of the Foggy Dean Gang when he and two other officers interrupted a robbery in progress.

Responding to what was believed to be a disturbance at the People's Motor Coach Company, Sergeant Lester was struck three times with submachine gunfire as he entered the front door and died at the scene.

The other officers engaged two suspects in a gunbattle before they fled the scene through a rear door.

The 32-year-old shooter and four other gang members, ranging in age from 31 to 37, were apprehended about a month later in Erlanger, Kentucky.

The men subsequently were each sentenced to life in prison. Three offenders were later granted clemency by Governor George N. Craig in 1955 and released on parole.

Sergeant Jones was survived by his wife and two sons.

The responsibilities of the Indianapolis Police Department (1854–2006) are now under the jurisdiction of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department.
