Cause of Death:Inspector Albert Kelly died a day after he was shot while arresting a wanted suspect.
The man was wanted for the attempted armed robbery at a Bell Liquor Store earlier in the day where he shot the owner. Inspector Kelly and two other officers went to the York Hotel after receiving information that a man matching his description was staying there.
While in the subject's room, the 19-year-old escapee from a mental hospital grabbed his coat, produced a handgun and opened fire. Inspector Kelly was struck three times in the neck and chest.
A second officer, who was shot in the back and survived, was able to return fire and killed the suspect. Both officers were transported to General Hospital where Inspector Kelly died early the following day.
Inspector Kelly, who was the second-highest ranking officer with the department at the time, was survived by his wife.
