Officer
Ronald Hugh Manley
Indianapolis Police Department
Thursday, December 12, 1974

Panel 53W, Line 5
Panel L25, Line 2

Officer Ronald Manley was shot and killed after responding to a holdup alarm at a Hook's Drug Store.

Two men had entered the store, disarmed the security guard before forcing him, the cashier and the pharmacist into a back room.

Officer Manley was first to arrive and as he ordered the suspects outside, two shots were fired. He was struck in the head and died during surgery at Methodist Hospital.

He had been able to return fire and killed a 21-year-old suspect, who was an escapee from an Alabama state prison while serving a two-to-four-year sentence for forgery.

Another 21-year-old suspect, out of jail on $200 bond for a drug charge and $500 bond for assault and battery charges, fled the scene but was apprehended later that day.

He was subsequently found guilty of first-degree murder and armed robbery. He was sentenced to life in prison and paroled in 2003.

Officer Manley was survived by his wife and three children, a son and two daughters ranging in age from six to eight.

The responsibilities of the Indianapolis Police Department (1854–2006) are now under the jurisdiction of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department.
