Cause of Death:Officer Gerald Griffin was shot and killed after responding to a domestic disturbance.
He was the first officer to arrive and upon approaching the residence, he was shot and killed. Two other responding officers were wounded by the suspect before he barricaded himself inside the home in a nearly two-hour standoff, which ended in his surrender.
Prior to the officer's arrival, the suspect had killed his 27-year-old former wife and her 54-year-old father as well as wounding her 53-year-old mother at the scene.
The 48-year-old suspect was charged with three counts each of murder, attempted murder and armed confinement. He was sentenced to death in 1980 and again in 2000, but while awaiting execution, he died in prison in 2006.
Officer Griffin was killed four days before his 30th birthday. He was survived by his wife and 19-month, 4- and 7-year-old daughters.
