Detective Sergeant Jack Ohrberg was shot and killed while serving murder warrants.

   Several gang members were being investigated for armed robberies at an American Fletcher National Bank branch on February 6 and a K-Mart store where a 53-year-old Brink's guard was killed on August 4 in which $47,000 in cash deposits were taken.

   After officers proceeded to the suspects' residence, he and another officer forced the front door open. Two shots were fired from inside, striking Detective Sergeant Ohrberg.

   He was transported to Wishard Memorial Hospital where he died over an hour later.

   Five individuals were subsequently arrested. Three male suspects, one of whom had been wounded, were later convicted of murder and two were sentenced to death.

   On December 8, 1994 at the Indiana State Prison in Michigan City, a 29-year-old offender became the last person in the state to be executed by electrocution.

   On July 18, 1996, the 26-year-old wounded offender, who was determined to have fired the fatal shot, became the first person in the state to be executed by lethal injection at the Indiana State Prison in Michigan City.

   A third offender, 26, was sentenced to 60 years in prison and discharged in 2012.

   A 23-year-old female was charged with assisting a criminal when she provided medical care to the third offender after the bank robbery.

   A 21-year-old female, who was a police clerk and second cousin to two of the offenders, was charged with assisting a criminal for providing details during the investigation. After passing a polygraph examination, the charge was dismissed by the prosecutor.

   Detective Sergeant Ohrberg was survived by his wife, four children and one grandson.

The responsibilities of the Indianapolis Police Department (1854–2006) are now under the jurisdiction of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department.
