Officer
Rod Lee Bradway
Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department
Friday, September 20, 2013

Panel 39W, Line 29 (2014)
Panel L27, Line 13 (2014)

Officer Rod Bradway was shot and killed after responding to a domestic disturbance call at the Eagle Pointe Apartment complex.

Upon his arrival, he heard a woman screaming for help and forced entry into an apartment where he came under fire by a male subject who fired at least six shots, wounding him. He was able to return fire eight times, striking the suspect.

Officer Bradway was shot in his chest above his bullet-resistant vest. He was taken to Wishard Memorial Hospital where he died from his wounds two hours later.

The 24-year-old suspect, who had held the victims captive for three hours, was shot and killed after the arrival by a second officer. He was a convicted felon who had been released on parole three months earlier for dealing and possessing cocaine.

Officer Bradway was assigned to the Northwest District. He had previously served with the Wayne Township Fire Department as a volunteer firefighter and emergency medical technician for 10 years. He was survived by his wife, Jamie; teenage son, Jonathan; teenage daughter, Sierra; brother, Carl "Chip"; and parents, Thomas and Sheri Ann.

He was posthumously awarded the department's Medal of Honor and Purple Heart for being credited with saving the lives of the suspect's former girlfriend and her 11-month-old daughter. Officer Bradway had recently been awarded the department’s Medal of Bravery for saving a suicidal man intent on killing himself with a butcher knife.
