Panel 4E, Line 29 (2015)
Panel L20, Line 13 (2014)

Officer Perry Renn was shot and killed after responding to a shots fired call.

While investigating the call, he and another officer exchanged gunfire with two subjects in the alley off Forest Manor Avenue south of East 34th Street. Officer Renn was struck three times by one of the subjects with a semi-automatic assault rifle and taken to Eskenazi Health where he died from his wounds a short time later.

One suspect, a 25-year-old-male, was also shot and critically injured. He was charged with murder and later pleaded guilty to be spared the death penalty. In April 2017, he was sentenced to life in prison without parole.

Officer Renn was assigned to the North District and was posthumously awarded the department's Medal of Honor and Purple Heart. He was also a two-time recipient of the Medal of Bravery awarded by his department. He had previously served with the former Metropolitan Emergency Communications Agency (MECA) for 18 months as a dispatcher/control operator.

Officer Renn was survived by his wife, Lynn Sappenfield-Renn; sister, Sherri (Michael) Jones; and parents, Phyllis Renn and David (Tina) Renn.
