Special Officer William Sibert was struck and killed by a switch engine in the railroad yards in Fort Wayne.

As he was patrolling the yards, he stepped away from one set of tracks to avoid an oncoming train and stepped into the path of a switch engine on an adjacent track that was backing up.

Special Officer Sibert, from South Whitley, was single and survived by his sister, three brothers and parents.

The responsibilities of the Pennsylvania Railroad Police Department (1846–1968) are now under the jurisdiction of the Norfolk Southern Railway Police Department.
