Lieutenant
Aaron William Allan
Southport Police Department
Thursday, July 27, 2017

Panel 16W, Line 31 (2018)
Panel L2, Line 15 (2017)

Lieutenant Aaron Allan was shot and killed after responding to a single-vehicle accident where a car traveling at a high rate of speed had rolled over into the front yard of a home on Madison Avenue just north of Maynard Drive in Homecroft.

He was assisting the Homecroft Police Department at the scene in which two male occupants were reportedly trapped in the vehicle. After Lieutenant Allan approached to render aid, the driver who was still trapped, opened fire striking him 11 times.

A Homecroft officer and an off-duty reserve deputy with the Johnson County Sheriff's Department returned fire, wounding the 28-year-old driver who was taken into custody.

Lieutenant Allan was transported to Eskenazi Hospital in Indianapolis where he died.

In a death penalty case, the driver was later found guilty in a bench trial. He was sentenced to 55 years in prison and three years suspended for murder and one year for possession of marijuana. In 2023, the Indiana Court of Appeals affirmed his conviction.

The 20-year-old passenger was released without charges.

Lieutenant Allan had served with the Southport Police Department for six years. He had previously served as a jailer with the Marion County Sheriff's Department as well as a resource officer with the Indiana School for the Deaf and the Franklin Township Community Schools Police Department.

He was survived by his wife, Stacy; 5-year-old son, Aaron Jr. and 18-year-old stepson, TJ; sister, Ryan; brother, Cory; father, James; mother, Laurie Lowery; and grandmother, Shirley Childs.
