Town Marshal Robert Walker was shot and killed while investigating the removal of a patron from a pool hall.

After the patron was removed to the street outside the establishment, Marshal Walker entered the pool room. He was met by the intoxicated proprietor who began arguing with him as he held him down on a pool table.

The son of the proprietor gained control over Marshal Walker's .32-caliber revolver and shot him in the head.

Marshal Walker was taken to his home where he died from his wound the following morning without regaining consciousness.

Both suspects were indicted for first-degree murder. The 18-year-old son was convicted of manslaughter, sentenced to two to 21 years in prison and paroled in 1914. The charges against the 50-year-old father were later dismissed.

Town Marshal Walker was survived by his wife, 4-year-old daughter, three brothers and two sisters.

Historical Note

Town marshals were elected to unlimited, two-year terms until 1917 when state law was amended to require they be appointed to office by the trustees of the town board.

The responsibilities of the Montgomery Town Marshal's Office are now under the jurisdiction of the Daviess County Sheriff's Department.
