Detective A. Earl Shull was struck and killed after falling from a train near Bremen.

On Sunday, he had left Garrett at 8:00 pm on a westbound train with Chicago as its destination. His body was found with a crushed skull on the railroad right-of-way about five miles west of Bremen by the crew of an eastbound freight train the next day.

Although it was initially thought he may have been killed by hobos, it was determined he had been struck by a train and ruled an accident during an inquest.

Detective Shull, from Garrett, was survived by his wife, daughter, two sons, two sisters and two brothers.

The responsibilities of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad Police Department (1828–1987) are now under the jurisdiction of the CSX Transportation Railroad Police Department.
