Incident Details
Cause of Death:Detective Gregory Ferency was shot and killed by a subject outside the office of the FBI Indianapolis resident agency in Terre Haute.
A man parked at the entrance, exited his pickup truck and threw a Molotov cocktail over the gate toward the building. Detective Ferency walked outside and was confronted by the suspect who raised his firearm and shot him.
He was able to return fire before an FBI agent exited the building and engaged in a gunbattle with the suspect. Despite being shot twice, the man was able to flee in his vehicle. Detective Ferency was transported to Union Hospital where he later died.
The 44-year-old suspect was located after he drove himself to Terre Haute Regional Hospital for treatment where he was taken into custody and hospitalized.
He has been charged in federal district court with premeditated murder of a federal agent, attempted arson of federal property and using a firearm during a violent crime causing death. He was formerly employed as a correctional officer at the United States Penitentiary in Terre Haute from 2005 to 2017.
Detective Ferency had been assigned to the FBI since 2010, first with the Safe Streets Task Force and most recently with the Joint Terrorism Task Force. He was survived by his son, Nicholas; daughter, Payton; parents, Michael and Dorothy; sister, Shelly (Kevin) Klingerman; and mother of his children, Jennifer.
