Deputy Sheriff Noah Rainey was killed in a single-vehicle accident while responding to assist a Rossville deputy town marshal on a traffic stop on State Road 26 just east of County Road 200 East after a brief pursuit.

He was driving eastbound, with an off-duty jail officer in the passenger seat, on State Road 26 approaching Washington Street, in Clinton County, when their patrol car left the south side of the roadway and struck a utility pole.

Both Deputy Rainey and the 23-year-old male jail officer suffered blunt force trauma and were pronounced dead at the scene.
