   Deputy Sheriff Asson Hacker died while participating in basic recruit training at the Southwest Indiana Law Enforcement Academy in Evansville.

   He felt ill during a physical tactics training exercise, became unresponsive and was transported to Deaconess Midtown Hospital where he never regained consciousness.

   An autopsy performed later determined Deputy Asson died of natural causes as a result of exertional sickling due to sickle cell trait.

   Deputy Sheriff Hacker, from Evansville, was survived by his fiancée, Kourtney Crockett; sons, Kendrick, Kyrie, Kayden Hacker and Jayvin Hout; parents, Paul Hacker and Wanda LaLonde; brothers, Joshua Massop, Lij Hacker and Justice Hacker; and sisters, Niya (Ivan) Sosa and Alexis Hacker.

Historical Notes

• Deputy Sheriff Hacker is the first of seven Indiana line of duty deaths in 2023.
• He is the third line of duty death of the Vanderburgh County Sheriff's Department.
• His line of duty death is the ninth that has originated from Vanderburgh County.
