   Correctional Lieutenant Donald Neiswinger died from complications after contracting coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) during an ongoing global pandemic.

   After becoming infected while on duty at the Reception Diagnostic Center in Plainfield, he was hospitalized at IU Health Bloomington Hospital where he remained until he passed away.

   Correctional Lieutenant Neiswinger, from Spencer, also served as a captain with the Owen Valley Fire Territory in Spencer for 22 years.

   He was survived by his wife, Rachel Deniece (née Salyers); son, Kyle; daughters, Natalie Jo (Ethan Rogers) and Lyndsey; and sister, Faye (John) Wrightsman.

• Correctional Lieutenant Neiswinger is also honored as a fire captain on the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial in Emmitsburg, Maryland.

Historical Notes

• Correctional Lieutenant Neiswinger is the first of five Indiana line of duty deaths in 2022.
• He is the 17th line of duty death of the Indiana Department of Correction.
• His line of duty death is the seventh that has originated from Hendricks County.
